Clan Fraser
This clan is perhaps one of the most famous, thanks to its inclusion in the Outlander stories. Those who follow the books or TV show will know that they lived in the Scottish Highlands, around the Inverness area. But did you know there was also a branch who lived in the lowlands too? They are distinguished with the Highlands clan being called Clan Fraser of Lovat. A great place to visit is Castle Fraser near Aberdeen. Or, if you are in central Scotland, you could visit the site of the Battle of Bannockburn. This 1314 battle saw Sir Alexander Fraser, from whom the senior Fraser line is descended, and his brother Sir Simon, ancestor of the Lovat Frasers, battle alongside Sir Robert the Bruce.
Clan MacLeod
Mainly associated with the Isle of Skye, Clan Macleod boasts Dunvegan Castle as its ancient seat. Amongst the treasures to be found here include the Fairy Flag. According to legend, if it is unfurled in battle its mysterious powers will mean Clan Macleod will be sure to defeat their enemies. If you are looking to immerse yourself in the history of Clan Macleod, taking a road trip around the Isle of Skye is one of the best ways to experience all the island has to offer.
Clan Bruce
If your genealogy research directs your family line to Clan Bruce, then a trip to the Scottish lowlands is in order. The most famous member of this clan is surely King Robert the Bruce, who fought alongside Clan Fraser, above. There are two key places to visit for those interested in this king’s history. The first is Dunfermline Abbey where Bruce’s body is interred, and the other is Melrose Abbey where his heart is kept.
Clan Campbell
The Clan Campbell was a powerful one, based mainly in the Argyll area of Scotland. They were heavily involved in the Scottish wars of independence. A great place to learn more about the clan is at Inveraray Castle. This is the seat of Clan Campbell and has plenty of history to tell.
