5-Day Itinerary: Mull

This itinerary involves taking the Ferry on and off Mull. We highly recommend that you pre-book your passage by visiting the Calmac Website. The two sailings we highlight on this trip are Oban – Craignure and Tobermory – Kilchoan. While we are confident that these ferries run most days the weather can sometimes cause delays or cancellations. However, whatever the weather, we are sure you will love driving on Mull.

Day 1 - Heading west

Start your journey by driving through the heart of the Strathearn Valley. Pass through quaint villages like Comrie and St. Fillans, enjoy the vistas of Loch Earn and the approaching Highland mountains. First stop is to explore Kilchurn Castle, an incredibly picturesque ruin of a once formidable stronghold.

After that head to Inverary for a spot of lunch, a favourite of ours is the café at The Bramble Hotel. After lunch head along the shores of Loch Fyne and over to Kilmartin. Home to one of the largest collections of prehistoric remains in Europe. Go explore the ancient cairns, standing stones and carvings on the following walk at Kilmartin Glen. If you fancy exploring another castle ruin Carnasserie is just a little further up the road at Carnasserie Castle. After you’re done exploring make your way to your first night’s accommodation.

Day 2 & 3 - Mull Adventures

An early ferry from Oban to Mull is an option or spend some time exploring the town before taking a later sailing. You’ll get great views from Mccaig’s Tower. Mull is a fantastic island to explore over the next few days. There are amazing beaches, towns and scenery to gaze upon. Wildlife and history are there in abundance.

Climb Ben More, visit Tobermory and the distillery or take a boat trip to the islands of Iona or to Staffa. The list of options is long and a great place to help plan is the official website of Mull & Iona.

Day 4 - West Highland Peninsula

Time to say goodbye to Mull and head for one of Scotland’s forgotten coastlines. Catch the ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan and get ready to explore this collection of peninsulas.

Head to the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, the most Westerly point on the UK mainland. Next up Castle Tioram, the Glen Finnan Viaduct and many other wonders await. Use West Highland Peninsulas to help plan your adventure.

The outdoor capital of the Highlands, Fort William, is a great spot for lunch with loads of options, The Black Isle Bar does a great pizza. After lunch head up Glen Nevis and take a walk to Steall Falls. After this head south towards your final nights’ accommodation.

CAMPSITE – The Red Squirrel
HOTEL – The Glencoe Hotel

Day 5 - Through the Highlands to home

An impressive drive through Glencoe awaits you this morning, probably Scotland’s most photographed glen. Once through you’re up onto Rannoch Moor, 50 square miles of uninhabited wilderness, bleak but beautiful. Before you reach back to us head for the Falls of Dochart in Killin, then enjoy the drive down the side of Loch Tay. Potential for a pitstop at the award-winning Highland Chocolatier Luxury Chocolates in Grandtully before joining the A9 and heading south through the big tree country of Highland Perthshire. If there’s time you can pop into the Taste of Perthshire Bankfoot Shop and Restaurant to grab any last-minute souvenirs and say hello to the resident Highland cattle.

Testimonials

The best. We cannot recommend Nomadic Scotland and the service provided by Michael any higher than by simply saying they’re the best. We enjoyed the most incredible week in one of Michael’s Land Rover Defenders, travelling from Crieff all the way to the Outer Hebrides and back. Communication, even from before we made the booking, was incredibly prompt and informative. This continued all the way through to collecting the keys, being shown the vehicle/tent and then throughout our trip. We feel very fortunate to have had the most amazing week in Scotland, with great weather and fantastic food. We can’t wait to come back and do it all again. Thank you Michael for an unforgettable trip.
